BARNES & CO GATES

Our Ethics & Sustainability Commitments

Our Business Principles

At Barnes & Co Gates, we believe that running a successful business involves more than simply manufacturing and selling quality products. It also means taking responsibility for how we operate, where our materials come from, how we treat people and the impact our activities have on the environment.

As an independent UK business specialising in the manufacture and installation of timber gates, we recognise our responsibility to conduct business honestly, fairly and with consideration for the communities and environment around us.

We are committed to maintaining high standards of workmanship, responsible trading practices, respect for fundamental human rights and the long-term sustainability of our operations.

These commitments form part of how we intend to develop Barnes & Co Gates as a responsible British manufacturing business.

1. Ethical Trading & Business Conduct

We believe that businesses, regardless of their size, should operate with integrity, transparency and respect for human dignity.

Barnes & Co Gates does not knowingly participate in, facilitate or directly support criminal activity, corruption, modern slavery, human trafficking, terrorism or serious violations of fundamental human rights.

We aim to maintain fair and responsible relationships with our customers, suppliers, contractors and business partners.

Our approach to ethical trading includes:

  • Conducting business honestly and transparently.

  • Treating customers, employees, suppliers and contractors fairly.

  • Complying with applicable UK laws and regulations.

  • Avoiding business relationships knowingly connected to serious criminal activity or human-rights abuses.

  • Maintaining fair and reasonable commercial practices.

  • Taking appropriate action where credible concerns arise regarding unethical conduct within our business relationships.

As a small UK business, we recognise that we cannot independently investigate every organisation involved in the wider supply chains of the products and materials we purchase.

Our commitment is therefore to act in good faith, exercise reasonable care when selecting suppliers and respond appropriately to credible information brought to our attention.

2. Human Rights, Equality & Non-Discrimination

Barnes & Co Gates supports the fundamental principles of human dignity, equality and freedom recognised through international human-rights standards, including the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights.

We oppose slavery, forced labour, human trafficking, racial persecution, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, terrorism, deliberate attacks on civilians and other serious violations of fundamental human rights.

We reject racism, xenophobia, misogyny, religious discrimination and all forms of racial supremacy or systematic oppression.

These principles apply universally, regardless of nationality, religion, ethnicity, political affiliation or geographical location.

We do not expect our customers, suppliers or contractors to share any particular political beliefs. However, we reserve the right to decline or discontinue business relationships where credible information indicates that our direct involvement would fundamentally contradict our ethical standards.

3. Responsible Timber Sourcing

Timber is at the heart of our business, and we recognise that responsible forestry and sustainable woodland management are essential to protecting natural resources for future generations.

We manufacture gates using a range of hardwoods and softwoods, and understand that different timber species have different environmental considerations, including their origin, availability and the forestry practices associated with their production.

Our commitment is to progressively strengthen our timber purchasing practices by:

  • Prioritising timber sourced from responsibly managed forests.

  • Seeking FSC or PEFC certification where commercially available and appropriate.

  • Working with established timber merchants and reputable suppliers.

  • Avoiding timber known to originate from illegal logging or unlawful deforestation.

  • Considering the environmental implications of timber species and sourcing locations.

  • Encouraging the use of durable timber species suitable for long-term outdoor applications.

We recognise that responsible sourcing is an ongoing process and that certification and traceability may vary between suppliers and timber species.

Our aim is to improve the transparency and sustainability of our supply chain as our business develops.

4. Our Environmental Sustainability Target — 2030

Barnes & Co Gates is committed to progressively reducing the environmental impact of its manufacturing operations.

Our sustainability target is to work towards sourcing 100% of our timber from responsibly managed and verifiable sources by 2030, while substantially reducing avoidable manufacturing waste.

We intend to work towards this target through practical and achievable improvements rather than making environmental claims that cannot be independently substantiated.

Our priorities include:

Responsible Materials

Increasing the proportion of timber purchased with recognised sustainability certification or equivalent evidence of responsible sourcing.

Manufacturing Waste Reduction

Improving material planning, cutting efficiency and stock management to minimise unnecessary timber waste.

Reuse & Recycling

Where practical, reusing suitable timber offcuts and exploring appropriate recycling or recovery options for workshop waste.

Product Durability

Manufacturing gates designed for long-term service, reducing the frequency with which products need to be replaced.

Efficient Operations

Reviewing opportunities to reduce unnecessary energy consumption, material usage and transport-related environmental impacts.

Continuous Improvement

Reviewing our progress periodically and updating our environmental practices as commercially practical solutions become available.

We recognise that achieving these objectives will require continued investment, cooperation with suppliers and improvements to our internal processes.

Our 2030 target represents a commitment to measurable improvement, not a claim that our operations are currently carbon-neutral, zero-waste or entirely sustainable.

5. Building Products That Last

We believe that one of the most practical contributions a manufacturer can make towards sustainability is producing goods that are designed to remain in service for many years.

Our approach to gate manufacturing prioritises appropriate timber selection, sound joinery techniques, structural integrity and careful workmanship.

We aim to manufacture products that can be maintained, repaired and refinished rather than unnecessarily replaced.

Where appropriate, we also encourage customers to consider protective finishes, routine maintenance and suitable installation methods to extend the service life of their gates.

By focusing on durability and repairability, we aim to reduce unnecessary material consumption and support a more responsible approach to manufacturing.

6. Responsible UK Manufacturing

As a British trading business, we recognise the importance of supporting skilled trades, maintaining traditional craftsmanship and contributing positively to the wider UK economy.

Our business is built around practical manufacturing skills and a commitment to producing quality timber gates for domestic and commercial customers.

We aim to:

  • Maintain high standards of British craftsmanship.

  • Support UK suppliers and service providers where practical.

  • Encourage responsible working practices and workshop safety.

  • Invest in suitable machinery, equipment and manufacturing methods.

  • Maintain honest and transparent relationships with customers.

  • Develop our business responsibly without compromising workmanship or ethical standards.

We believe responsible manufacturing should balance commercial sustainability with environmental responsibility, product quality and fair business conduct.

7. Accountability & Continuous Improvement

We recognise that no business operates without an environmental impact or a complex network of suppliers.

As a small independent company, our ability to influence global supply chains is limited. However, this does not prevent us from making responsible decisions within the areas we can control.

Our commitments are intended to guide our business decisions and encourage continuous improvement.

Where credible concerns arise about our sourcing practices, business relationships or environmental impact, we will consider the available evidence and take reasonable action where appropriate.

We will review our sustainability objectives as our business grows and aim to communicate our progress without exaggerating our achievements.

Our Commitment

At Barnes & Co Gates, we believe ethical business practices, environmental responsibility and quality craftsmanship should go hand in hand.

We will not knowingly allow commercial interests to override our fundamental ethical standards, and we will continue working towards a more responsible and sustainable approach to timber manufacturing.

Our ambition is straightforward: to build a successful British business that produces quality products, treats people fairly, sources materials responsibly and leaves a smaller environmental footprint for future generations.
